Quilt Market Just Opened! 3 Things That Caught My Eye So Far…

Quilt Market just opened a few hours ago, and by the looks of my view of the show floor, things are busy!

PIcture of the show floor just after the doors opened.

I took a quick walk earlier on the exhibitor side and thought to note three fun things to check out for those who are here at Market:

1. AccuQuilt (Booth #844) has some new die cuts out that the hexie lovers and modern quilters of the world will want to check out: new English paper piecing hexagon die cuts, including ones for teeny tiny 1/2″ hexies. They also have die-cuts for  clamshell quilts:

Here’s a clamshell quilt top in progress made with the die cuts:

2. Also make sure to go play putt putt in the Aurifil booth (#944). I am serious…you can really play for thread and the stakes are high!

3. And lastly, BERNINA has some pretty exciting news: they are debuting their very first long arm machine!

You can go check it out at the BERNINA booth, #1144.

More soon!

What Does “Downton Abbey” Have To Do With Quilt Market?

I confess I am a diehard “Downton Abbey” fan–so much so that I have spent a good number of months trying to cajole our Quilts Inc. staff to dress up as the cast for Halloween at Quilt Festival and promenade down “Main Street.” I personally dreamed of dressing up as Carson the burly butler. He really is so cute…

How much fun would it be to don furry eyebrows and be cloaked in Edwardian livery?

Unfortunately, all my cajoling and coaxing went to no avail–I couldn’t win the staff over–but I have great news in that “Downton Abbey” (the real “Downton Abbey”) will be making a presence at Quilt Market!  Andover Fabrics has an event planned for all of us anglophiles in attendance:

Andover Fabrics is coming out with a Downton Abbey fabric collection!

From Andover Fabrics:

Please join us at International Quilt Market in Houston on Friday, October 25th at 10AM for a historic schoolhouse event!

DOWNTON ABBEY: THE SCHOOLHOUSE – Join members of the Downton Abbey production team as they give insight into their award-winning show and the inspiration behind Downton’s premier fabric collection. The first 1,000 attendees to pick up their schoolhouse registration package and class program will receive a coupon for a Downton Abbey tote bag, to be given out at the end of the schoolhouse session. As if that weren’t enough excitement, we’ll also be airing a sneak peek of the upcoming season of Downton Abbey!

The event will be held in Ballroom C of the George Brown Convention Center, immediately following Karey Bresenhan’s and Marti Michell’s opening remarks. We hope to see you there!

I think it’s pretty cool the actual production team from the show will be coming to Quilt Market, and I will be curious which fabric line will be the most popular. Will it be the Dowager Countess, Lady Mary, Lady Edith, or Lady Sybil?

Fabric collection inspired by the character of Lady Mary.

I have seen all four and they are terrific, but I am partial to Lady Mary, mostly because I want to raid her wardrobe.

I hope the first collection is so successful, that they come out with a second, and include a fabric line inspired by Shirley MacLaine’s character, the American spitfire Martha Levison. I can just imagine the fun the production team would have creating fabrics that represent such a bold, outspoken (and in the Dowager Countess’s eyes–crass) character!

Fall Quilt Market 2012 Forecast!

We are starting to settle into the George R. Brown and I thought now would be an excellent time to give you a forecast for what is to come over the next weekend of Quilt Market.

First, let me give you the forecast for Market (and I mean, literally…let me give you the forecast):

If you click on the above image, you’ll see the extended ten-day forecast for the Houston area, which shows that even thought it is going to be a little chilly over the weekend with highs only in the low-to-mid 70s (brrrrrrr), the temperature picks up the middle of next week so we are once again in the low 80s. Don’t forget that once the air is turned on in the convention center, it can get quite chilly, so pack that cardigan!

We also have some happenings at Quilt Market that I want to make sure you are aware of:

COME to our Fabric 2.0 Meet & Greet!

Fabric 2.0 Meet & Greet is brought to you by Quilt Market, and we are ever so grateful to our generous and shining sponsors for helping make this reception possible: Craftsy (our GOLD sponsor) and Quilting Arts (our Silver sponsor)!

One from the scrapbooks: Here I am with Elinor Peace Bailey and Luana Rubin from the very first Fabric 2.0 Meet & Greet in 2008. Fun times!

For those who have not attended Fabric 2.0’s Meet & Greet that the bubbly Caroline Devoy devised, hosted, and coordinated for the past four years, this is a very lively, casual, and fun kick-off to Quilt Market where those attending Market can meet up, enjoy a drink, and make new friends! No need to RSVP at this point, it is a cash bar with food, so please stop by with a smile, your camera, and your business or MOO cards!

Where: 3rd Floor Pre-Function Area at the Hilton

When: Friday, October 26, 6:00-8:00 PM
